The NFL is making concessions to cord cutters this season that the league had been rejecting for so long. Earlier this year the NFL partnered with Yahoo Sports to make games available for streaming regardless of their availability in market on traditional television. Now, the league and the NFL Network are offering RedZone as an over-the-top streaming service.
A new app, available for both Android and iOS devices, allows users to sign in with their existing credentials (your login information from your satellite or cable provider) or sign up for an account to view RedZone coverage of NFL Sundays. Signing up for an account will cost users $4.99 per month.
Now, the NFL is still the NFL after all, so you know it wasn’t going to make this easy. Cord Cutters News has reported a couple of major restrictions on the app. First, both Apple and Google have blocked the ability to stream the app to your television, so it only works on mobile devices. And we do mean ONLY mobile devices. The service will not work on a tablet either. Legal language in the app’s terms of service stipulate that it can only be used on mobile phones equipped for two-way communication.
