Netflix seems to be setting a trend of only giving schools two years as the subject of its juco football reality series Last Chance U. The first two seasons focused on East Mississippi Community College. The second season focusing on Kansas’s Independence Community College dropped last month. Now comes word that the series will head west for season 5.
Laney College in Oakland, California will be the next Last Chance U. No official launch date has been set, but in a Tweet, producers confirmed that the fifth season is coming in 2020.
Laney head coach Jon Beam told the San Jose Mercury News that his school and his players are something different from Last Chance U‘s previous stops.
“I said you’re not (rejects). All those kids from the other shows either left school, got kicked out from a four-year school or something. Well, that’s not us. You’re the kids who came here for a reason. To better your grades or better you football outlook. We’re your best chance.”
Beam will almost certainly be a major focus of season five. 2019 is his 40th as a football coach and is a legend in the city of Oakland. Prior to taking over at Laney, he spent 22 years at Skyline High School, where his teams won 15 Oakland city titles and 11 section championships.
The Laney Eagles have been under Beam’s leadership for the last 16 years. His teams have a 90% graduation rate and averages 11 Division I signees a year. Stats like those should make season 5 very different from previous editions of Last Chance U.
