Gus Johnson Signed Game Notes For JK Dobbins

Fox relied heavily on Ohio State for its Big Noon Saturday broadcasts this season. By the time the Buckeyes met the Wisconsin Badgers in the Big Ten Championship game on Saturday night, they had been on Fox seven times in 2019. It’s safe to say broadcasters Gus Johnson and Joel Klatt became very familiar with head coach Ryan Day and his star players and visa versa.

After the game, Johnson celebrated Ohio State’s conference championship by giving a gift to a familiar face. The exuberant announcer gave Ohio State’s star running back JK Dobbins his signed game nights from the event.

“This is clearly reminiscent of Jim Nantz’s annual tie giveaway tradition,” The Big Lead’s Kyle Koster wrote. “It should be noted that the CBS broadcaster never intended that impromptu gift to be public, whereas Fox just tweeted this one out.”

Whether or not this is the start of a new tradition remains to be seen. It could be a one-time gift to celebrate an exceptional season that Johnson’s broadcast season allowed him to see up close and personal many times. Of course, given Fox’s relationship with the Big Ten and just how much better Ohio State is than the other 13 teams in the league, it is likely that Gus Johnson will see a lot more great Ohio State performances worthy of signed show prep in the future.
