Roy Bellamy is usually the quietest in The Dan Le Batard Show’s “Shipping Container of Frightened Refugees.” On Tuesday though, the producer spoke out about his feelings on the moment that Americans are living through amidst the protests following the death of George Floyd.
Bellamy has a daughter named Claire. He fought back tears as he spoke about what realizations he has had about his two-and-a-half-year-old as he watches the news.
“I’ve been thinking about how early I’m going to end up giving her ‘The Talk’ about how to handle herself when she’s around policemen,” Bellamy said during the show’s second hour on Tuesday. “It’s probably going to be rather early. It’s probably going to be before she’s a teenager. Because what I’m seeing out there is, I’m seeing my beautiful brothers and sisters being murdered with impunity. That’s what I’m seeing.”
He went on to say that what he has seen on TV in recent days and months has had a profound impact on his desire to expand his family.
“How am I going to be able to protect my child even when I’m with her outside of this house? How? If I get pulled over, and I’ve had many run-ins with cops, if I get pulled over, anything can happen.”
Le Batard himself empathized with Bellamy and said that so much of what he has seen on the news in the last week reminds him of what brought his parents to Miami. Both of Dan Le Batard’s parents are Cuban refugees, who fled the country as Fidel Castro came to power.
“Our country doesn’t feel like our country,” he said.
