You read his weekly columns on this website, and if you live in Chicago or root for the Chicago White Sox, you’ll soon be able to enjoy the sound of his voice on Sox radio broadcasts. That’s right, Andy Masur has been named the new radio play-by-play voice of the White Sox on WGN.
Masur has been with WGN since 2014, serving as the pregame host for the last two seasons. He’s also called an inning for home games and stepped in as a fill-in voice when Ed Farmer or Darrin Jackson were off. Farmer unfortunately passed away in April at the age of 70 due to complications from a previous illness. He had been in the Sox radio booth for 28 years and the team’s main play-by-play voice since 2006.
Though replacing Farmer is a tall order, Masur’s familiarity with all involved should make for a seamless transition. He’ll join Jackson in the booth for the 2020 season, with games expected to begin in late July.
“Many people before me have said legends cannot be replaced, and the great Ed Farmer is truly irreplaceable,” said Masur. “As a fellow Chicagoan, I hope my passion for the city and the game of baseball connects with White Sox fans in a way that Ed would be proud of.”
Though he is increasing his profile and role on Sox broadcasts, Masur is no stranger to calling games. He’s previously called San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs games, as well as NCAA basketball games.
