Steve Buckhantz Wants To Be Voice Of Washington Football Team

Steve Buckhantz joined Chad Dukes on 106.7 The Fan and threw his hat in the ring to be the next radio play-by-play announcer of the temporarily named Washington Football Team.

From 1997 – 2019 Buckhantz spent 23 years as the TV voice for the Washington Wizards franchise. Following the 2018-19 season, NBC Sports Washington and the Wizards replaced Buckhantz as part of an overhaul for their television broadcast team. But the 65-year old and popular DC sports personality is eager for an opportunity to get back behind the mic of a local pro team.

“I know I could do the job and I know the history of the team really well,” Buckhantz said of the Washington Football Team. “[I] feel like I’m pretty polished, so we’ll see what happens. It would be an honor,” he added while expressing gratitude for having the ability to even be mentioned as a candidate.

Less than two weeks ago, longtime radio voice of the Washington Football Team, Larry Michael suddenly departed the position. Michael spent 16 years in the radio booth for the franchise formerly known as the Washington Redskins, but retired a day before he was among seven former team employees named for allegations of sexual harassment. With his departure, Julie Donaldson steps into the role of Senior VP of Media for the Washington NFL Franchise, in charge of finding Michael’s replacement.

Buckhantz told Dukes he hasn’t yet been contacted by the team, but knows Donaldson, a former colleague.

“We worked together for a long, long time at Comcast SportsNet and NBC Sports Washington,” Buckhantz said. “So we’re very good friends and I respect her work. She’s fabulous. She’s going to do an incredible job.”

“We’ve had some contact,” Buckhantz told Dukes. “But nothing along the lines of, ‘Hey, you want to come in and talk about this’ yet, so we’ll see what happens.”
