Authur Ochs Sulzberger Jr To Retire As New York Times Chairman

The New York Times will be undergoing some changes heading into 2021 as current chairman and a member of the newspaper’s board, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., will be retiring by the end of this year.

Sulzberger Jr. joined The Times back in 1978 as a correspondent. After his family purchased the company in 1992, he became a publisher, where he eventually assumed the chairman’s role in 1997.

When it comes to who will take over as chairman, A.G. Sulzberger, who has been the New York Times publisher since 2018, will be succeeding his father.

The younger Sulzberger worked previously as a reporter for The Providence Journal and The Oregonian before taking the metro desk role with the New York Times back in 2009.

Authur Ochs Sulzberger Jr. released a statement over his pending departure:

“Serving this essential institution and working alongside so many gifted journalists over the years has been the privilege of my life. There’s an old saying, ‘Laurels are nice to wear, but never to rest upon.’ I know A.G. will not rest in his drive to empower our journalists and expand the scope of The Times’s ambitions. And with a dynamic new C.E.O. and the best executive editor in the business, I depart knowing the best is yet to come.”
