A social media platform that was banned by Amazon’s hosting service relaunched Monday. Parler, which came under fire following a deadly siege on the U.S. Capitol building last month said it was rebuilt on independent technology making the platform less reliant on big tech.
The company also appointed Mark Meckler as its interim Chief Executive. He replaces John Matze who was fired by the board last month.
Parler said in a statement Monday it would be available to its current users in the first week and would be open to new users the next week.
“When Parler was taken offline in January by those who desire to silence tens of millions of Americans, our team came together, determined to keep our promise to our highly engaged community that we would return stronger than ever,” said Meckler.
Parler became a popular medium of communication for disgruntled Trump supporters immediately following the election. The platform went dark after being cut off by Google and Apple after failing to police violent content.
“Parler is being run by an experienced team and is here to stay,” Meckler said. “We will thrive as the premier social media platform dedicated to free speech, privacy and civil dialogue.”
