John Oliver Critical of Joe Biden Over Visa Process for Afghan Translators

“Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver went after President Joe Biden for the failed promises to thousands of Afghan translators. The United States is moving most of its troops out of Afghanistan well before the Aug. 31 deadline.

However, the Afghan translators, who assisted the troops, have yet to secure visas to move themselves and their families to the United States since they’re dealing with life-threatening situations. The translators that helped during the war have received death threats by the Taliban for treasonous actions.

As of 2014, more than 300 translators or their family members have been killed. Biden has been vocal about supporting these translators, but Oliver commented that Americans control these people’s destinations.

“Putting the choice on the applicants is basically a surgeon handing you a scalpel saying, ‘there is a tumor-free pancreas in your body if you so choose, and I will stand with you.’ I think you might be fundamentally confused who has power over the outcome here,” Oliver said.

Oliver then directed his criticism at Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who stated that these translators should fight the Taliban rather than coming to the United States.

“That’s pretty rich coming from a guy who couldn’t even win a fight against his neighbor on his own front lawn,” Oliver said about a 2017 incident where a neighbor tackled Paul over lawn clippings.
