The latest athlete to enter the world of podcasting is 12-year NFL quarterback Jay Cutler. Cutler launched a new podcast for PodCast One called UnCut with Jay Cutler on Wednesday. The first episode he did was with Tom Waddle and Marc Silverman from ESPN Radio 1000 AM in Chicago.
Before the first episode officially launched, Cutler was a guest on The Adam Schefter Podcast to talk about the new show. Cutler doesn’t look at himself as a podcaster yet, but says there is a lot he likes about the new gig.
“I did the first one and kind of was hesitant going into it. I did it with Waddle and Silvy out of Chicago. I’ve known them forever. Great guys. We’re in the middle of it and I was like, this is kind of fun, I’m enjoying this. I think after playing football, I was looking for something I would enjoy that you could get a little bit of competition. It’s hard to replace that completely.”
Cutler told Schefter that he hopes fans don’t assume every episode of UnCut will be like the first one. There is a lot he still has to learn and that means the show will continue to evolve and dive into new areas.
“I’m going to probably open up more about myself, I’m going to bring some people on that I’ve known throughout my life that are close to me, some new people I’ve met that are close to me. Just kind of see how it goes. I didn’t really have a plan going into it. This might change 6 months down the road. Football’s coming up, so we’ll hit on football and kind of dive into that a little bit. It’s some uncharted waters for me for sure.”
Back in 2017, Cutler was going to join FOX as a TV analyst with Kevin Burkhardt and Charles Davis (now at CBS). However, he decided to unretire and go play quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. Cutler said he was excited about going into broadcasting. After one final year of playing though, his thoughts on replacing one job that had him on the road every weekend with a different one changed.
“The boys were getting older, we were starting the reality show. It was just one of those situations where I didn’t want to really be gone that same timeframe that I was playing (Friday, Saturday, Sunday). I just wasn’t at a place in my life where I wanted to commit to that same schedule and that travel schedule, so I passed. There’s definitely times where I kind of regret that decision, but it’s worked out for me.”
