WBAL Radio Pays Tribute to the Late Ron Smith

WBAL Radio paid tribute recently to a Baltimore broadcasting legend who passed away ten years ago after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Ron Smith was known as the “voice of reason” for his journalistic integrity and unwavering commitment to the news.

Smith was a fixture on TV and radio, co-anchoring WBAL-TV’s Action News and hosting the “Ron Smith Show” for 27 years.

WBAL reporter Rob Lang reflected on Smith’s legacy for an article on the station’s website.

“Ron was a rare breed in talk radio,” Lang wrote. “He did not want listeners to agree with him. He just wanted you to think about the world. There was no better example of that than his opposition to the Iraq War.”

Lang said Smith had an uncanny ability to remain calm during significant breaking news situations.

“As a talk show host, his positions were always thoughtful and well-researched,” Lang said. “His debates were spirited and animated but respectful.”

“Ten years later, Ron may be gone, but his voice and influence remains, here at the station he called, “The Mighty 1090,” now known as WBAL NewsRadio 1090 and FM 101.5,” he added.
