Rachel Maddow has been away from her daily news show for MSNBC. The anchor is working on other projects that are part of her new deal with the company, but in the short time she’s been gone, they’re beginning to feel the effects in the ratings.
According to the New York Post, MSNBC’s marquee 9 p.m. show lost about 30% of its viewers in the pivotal 25-54 demographic on Monday, the second day of Maddow’s weeks-long break.
Furthermore, the report states that the episode accumulated an average of 201,000 viewers in the essential demo, which is down 29% in contrast to the Monday of the previous week when Maddow was still hosting the show.
Despite the struggles without Maddow, MSNBC is still beating out CNN in this time slot as it still beat out anchor Anderson Cooper in the coveted 25-54 demo, which drew 176,000 viewers.
In General, MSNBC’s 9 p.m. attracted more than double the number of viewers as CNN’s Cooper, which managed to draw 615,000 people in its audience.
Maddow’s star power is vital to MSNBC’s primetime schedule. “The Rachel Maddow Show” yields almost 1 million viewers more than shows before and after her’s which are hosted by Chris Hayes and Lawrence O’Donnell.
