Clarissa Ward Reports From Ukraine Metro Station Turned Bomb Shelter

Early Thursday morning, Ukrainians woke up to a Russian attack, and cities like Kharkiv were hit by the bombings. As a result, many citizens took shelter in the city’s subway station, which they converted into a makeshift bomb shelter.

CNN’s Clarissa Ward reported from Kharkiv, where she interviewed Ukrainians bearing cover inside the metro from Russia’s bombing campaign.

“I’ve never really seen a situation like this,” Ward said to “CNN Newsroom.” “This feels, to me, like scenes from World War II and the Blitz. There are just hundreds an hundreds of people who are hunkered down here with absolutely no sense of what tomorrow will bring.”

Ward talked to a Ukrainian woman named Oksana inside the subway station turned bomb shelter, who stated she and her two kids left their home early in the morning when they heard the first explosions. Oksana added that she plans to remain in the tunnel with her family overnight.

“You see a lot of strength and resilience down here, “Ward said after talking with Oksana.

“You also see a lot of desperation, a lot of tears, a lot of people holding hands, a lot of people holding each other, and just waiting to see what comes next, where they go from here, and what their place will be in this new Ukraine.”
