Applebee’s Disappointed in CNN for Ill-Timed Ad During Russian Invasion

Applebee’s and CNN are dealing with some bad publicity after an ill-timed ad for the chain restaurant aired during a live broadcast of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Bianna Golodryga and Jim Sciutto covered the events on Thursday morning when informing their audience that they were heading to a commercial break. CNN’s viewers watched the sound of air-raid sirens in a live shot of Kyiv.

Then the Applebee’s commercial ran, accompanied by the Zac Brown Band’s song “Chicken Fried,” disrupting the gravity of the moment. Viewers went from seeing the seriousness of the situation in Ukraine to being offered five boneless wings for $1 and Applebee’s hand-crafted hamburgers.

Following the awkward moment that had the ill-timed ad go viral on social media, Forbes reporter Marty Swant relayed a statement from an Applebee’s spokesperson. 

“We are deeply concerned about the situation in Ukraine. When we were made aware that our ad was placed in this manner, we immediately reached out to CNN to pause our advertising on their network. It never should have aired, and we are disappointed in the actions of the network,” the spokesperson said.
