Actor Matthew McConaughey was at a White House press briefing on Tuesday, sharing the stories of those who died in the elementary school shooting in his native Uvalde, Texas.
McConaughey spent all week talking with the families of those killed in the mass shooting before heading to the nation’s capital. Following his briefing, he spoke with Bret Baier on FOX News Channel’s “Special Report” to elaborate on what he discussed.
The actor wanted to clarify that he doesn’t intend to run for office, and the reason for his being at the White House was because of the tragedy hitting close to home and not wanting the 21 deaths to go in vain.
“I am not running for political office,” McConaughey said. “I’m here because, the 24th of May, I got the news that there was a mass shooting in the town that I was born in, Uvalde, Texas.”
“But the main theme that we got out it was every single family that lost a loved one, or a child said, you know what, I just want some way for the loss of my loved one’s life to matter. And I think that’s what we are talking about on the cusp here, here in D.C. today. How can we make it matter?”
Furthermore, McConaughey also spoke on the divide in the U.S., and he doesn’t believe it is as extreme as some say it is, adding there are more people at the center and not the extreme left or right.
“I think we’re being told we’re more divided than we are. I think that the veil over the masses’ eyes, I think we got the numbers. And we got to pull that veil off. Quit drinking that Kool-Aid, because we’re hearing it from both sides, the extreme right and extreme left. And they have the microphone. And I believe we have the numbers.”
“The masses have the numbers, that — but we got to take the mic back — mic back. Kick them off democracy’s boat and say, no, no, no, you’re not steering this boat. We’re — I’m much more aggressively centrist like that. And I believe that the people I talk to on both sides are much more reasonable about things than we’re being told we are.”
