The future of Twitter is up in the air as, over the weekend, the company laid off several contractors. With employees exiting the company in high volume, the question is how the platform will survive.
CNN media reporter Oliver Darcy appeared on “CNN Newsroom With Jim Acosta” Saturday, discussing whether advertisers, who make up a significant amount of Twitter’s revenue, will want to stick around.
“Twitter is a company that makes most of its money through advertisements, and advertisers are very afraid right now of the platform because of some of the things that Elon Musk has said and some of the things he’s done,” Darcy said.
“Well, over the last few days, given all of the disarray, it’s hard to see how these advertisers are going to come back. And so without that advertiser revenue and without any other source of revenue, it leads to real questions about the future of this platform.”
Under Musk, Twitter is a revolving door of news, whether from layoffs or the rollout of Twitter Blue, allowing anyone to purchase a verified checkmark and leading to many impersonating companies or brands.
At some point, advertisers will need to decide whether to stay or go.
