DirecTV Drops Newsmax, Cites ‘Demands for Rate Increases’

A report recently revealed that some Republicans are signing a letter sent to DirecTV accusing the company of “deplatforming” Newsmax and other conservative media. However, that didn’t work.

DirecTV announced Wednesday that it dropped Newsmax, TheWrap confirmed. Additionally, in a statement from the company, the move came late Tuesday due to a continued carriage fee disagreement.

“On multiple occasions, we made it clear to Newsmax that we wanted to continue to offer the network, but ultimately Newsmax’s demands for rate increases would have led to significantly higher costs that we would have to pass on to our broad customer base,” the spokesperson told TheWrap.

A DirecTV spokesperson stated that Newsmax is no longer available on DirecTV, DirecTV Stream, or U-verse.

“This is a blatant act of political discrimination and censorship against Newsmax,” Christopher Ruddy, CEO of Newsmax, said on the network’s website. “The most extreme liberal channels, even with tiny ratings, get fees from AT&T’s DirecTV, but Newsmax and OAN need to be deplatformed.”

Despite removing Newsmax, DirecTV noted that it respects diverse viewpoints and viewpoints and will always work to preserve extensive choice among various entertainment and information services.

“We continually evaluate the most relevant programming to provide our customers and expect to fill this available channel with new content,” the spokesperson added.
