Barstool Sports founder and owner Dave Portnoy is having conversations with SiriusXM about potentially rejoining the network to host a radio show, he revealed on Tuesday’s edition of The Kirk Minihane Show. While being interviewed by Minihane, Portnoy expressed that the company may be interested in rekindling the relationship with him rather than Barstool Sports as a whole, meaning that the company is only interested in signing him on. Earlier in the month, Portnoy tagged SiriusXM in a post on X simply saying, “Let’s talk,” and there is evidently a yearning to express himself on a regular platform again after re-purchasing Barstool Sports from PENN Entertainment.
At the moment though, there is no deal that has been completed. Portnoy affirmed that there would need to be “a big bag of money” offered his way for him to commit to the program, which would require him to modify his schedule. Since becoming majority owner of Barstool Sports again, he has made frequent appearances on Barstool Radio and given his candid opinions on a variety of different topics.
“I think I could do a good show for Sirius,” Portnoy said. “I think we’ll have to see. I like Sirius; Sirius likes me. If I’m going to do it, it would not be like last time we had the station in which I had a million things going on.”
Barstool Sports began airing its content on SiriusXM in 2017 before partnering with the entity to launch a 24-hour channel in the next year. The partnership lasted until 2021 when Portnoy expressed that the contract the satellite radio provider offered to the company was beneath consideration. Entering his meeting with the company, he hoped to bring the entire Barstool station back to its content offerings; however, he quickly discovered that he is the only thing its management is considering at this time.
Portnoy, however, does not feel the two sides are close on a price point, declining to give a number to Minihane when asked. When he reassumed ownership of the company, Portnoy expressed how Barstool Sports would return to its roots as a “content hub.” In the early days of the new era of the company, he has been working diligently to help it reach that point, starting his tenure by immediately re-hiring Ben Mintz.
“I said, ‘Here’s the neighborhood of what it is,’” Portnoy explained. “I’m not going to say what that number is right now. ‘I’ll have no offense if you’re like, ‘Oh, you’re way out of… bounds [and] I can’t do it. I still want to be invited to all your free Sirius shows – no hard feelings.’”
