CNN is running into a speed bump after recently launching its second attempt at a streaming service, CNN Max. DirecTV is uneasy about the network’s new platform, which closely resembles its TV network.
Variety reported on Tuesday, citing someone familiar with the matter, that DirecTV executives sent a letter to Warner Bros. Discovery expressing their concerns. DirecTV believes the similarities between the two products violate the carriage contract between the two companies.
The news outlet’s new streaming service includes many programs that run on linear CNN, including CNN This Morning, The Lead With Jake Tapper, and Anderson Cooper 360.
“WBD maintains strong and meaningful relationships with our affiliate partners. Our partners are aware of and understand our rationale with Max, which is to reach new audiences,” Warner Bros. Discovery said in a statement.
Furthermore, Warner Bros. Discovery stated that CNN Max appeals to a different audience than its cable counterpart. A spokesperson for DirecTV did not respond immediately to Variety for the story.
