Billionaire Elon Musk bought then-Twitter, which he has since rebranded as X, in the fall of 2022. Usage of that social media platform has dropped noticeably since that purchase.
As part of its Infinite Dial report, Edison Research shows that in both 2022 and 2023, 27% of the U.S. population claimed to use the social media platform. However, that figure has dropped to just 19% in 2024, the report says.
“While The Infinite Dial has recorded many incremental changes over its long history, a 30% change in any metric year-over-year is incredibly rare and noteworthy,” the company said.
The company does note that in 2022 and 2023 those surveyed were asked whether they were users of “Twitter”, while the rebranded “X” was used for respondents in 2024.
Respondents also showed a decline in both monthly and weekly usage of the Elon Musk-owned platform.
