Longtime WPRO morning host Gene Valicenti is expanding his news program to another state and another market.
Starting Monday, The News with Gene Valicenti will be heard on WXLM-AM in Groton/New London, Connecticut, in addition to his already established home in the Providence metro.
Valicenti made the announcement while anchoring the 6 PM news on NBC 10 Wednesday evening.
“Big news, we’re adding a third station Monday morning. AM 890 WXLM in Groton/New London. So southeastern Connecticut can enjoy a number one news and information show on the radio, too,” Valicenti said. “A bigger reach for better coverage, starting Monday.”
A Rhode Island news media institution, Gene Valicenti has worked in the state since 1992, including more than 30 years at NBC 10 WJAR in Providence. He is a member of the Rhode Island Broadcasting Hall of Fame and also the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame.
Like WPRO, WXLM is a news/talk station owned by Cumulus. Previously, the station re-aired the nationally syndicated Red Eye Radio during morning drive. Valicenti will host from 6-9 AM, leading into The Chris Plante Show on the Southern Connecticut outlet.
