ESPN Promotes Mike Foss to Replace David Roberts

Date:

As David Roberts begins to wind down his career, ESPN doesn’t have to look far for his replacement. It has named Mike Foss as Roberts’ successor.

What We Know: Mike Foss elevates to the role of Executive Vice President and Executive Editor of the Sports News and Entertainment division. Foss’ appointment is effective immediately. He will report to ESPN President of Content, Burke Magnus, working closely with David Roberts on the transition process. Roberts is expected to retire at the end of August. Foss will continue collaborating closely with The Pat McAfee Show in addition to assuming more responsibility..

What They Said: “In his nine years with ESPN, Mike has continually demonstrated his collaborative leadership style and excellent organizational and management skills, as well as his boundless vision, innovation and creativity. I am confident that he will continue to do so in his new role and help make us better every day.” -ESPN President of Content Burke Magnus

What Remains Unclear: Who replaces Foss leading the network’s studio and entertainment divisions? ESPN is expected to hire for the position. How that individual settles in will be important. With Dave Roberts exiting this summer, how does the transition period affect everyone? Does Foss step in and make tweaks or do they have to wait until Roberts signs off?

What It Means: Foss has worked at ESPN since 2017. He has been behind many of the network’s expansions in the digital space and is highly regarded. But he has big shoes to fill. Roberts is one of the most well-respected executives in the business.
