Baltimore Public Media Adding New Midday Show with D. Watkins

"Deeply rooted in Baltimore, D. Watkins brings an authentic voice and a demonstrated commitment to telling the stories of our city and region."

Date:

Baltimore Public Media is adding a new weekday program to its WYPR lineup this fall. D. Watkins will host The Engagement, a show focused on Baltimore and its communities.

What We Know: The Engagement will premiere Monday, October 19, on WYPR. The show will air Monday through Thursday at 11 a.m. D. Watkins, a New York Times bestselling author, will host the program. Baltimore Public Media says the show will focus on amplifying Baltimore voices and strengthening connections across the community. The launch comes as WBAL NewsRadio has ended its local midday programming and added nationally syndicated programs, including Glenn Beck and The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show.

What They Said: “The Engagement reflects our commitment to providing an essential public service that amplifies the voices of Baltimore and strengthens connections across our community. Deeply rooted in Baltimore, D. Watkins brings an authentic voice and a demonstrated commitment to telling the stories of our city and region. This program will represent what we aspire to be at Baltimore Public Media: a trusted place founded in truth, where people feel heard, informed and connected.” -Baltimore Public Media President/CEO Craig Swagler

“The Engagement couldn’t arrive at a better time. As we are fighting to survive this era of misinformation, I believe we’re going to make an honest attempt to continue the legacy of public radio by creating a space where the truth isn’t only required but celebrated.” -D. Watkins

What Remains Unclear: Baltimore Public Media hasn’t detailed the show’s full format, regular features, or whether it will include additional contributors. The organization also hasn’t announced how The Engagement will affect other WYPR programming beyond its 11 a.m. timeslot.

What It Means: The new program gives WYPR a locally focused voice during a time when Baltimore’s commercial news/talk radio market is moving toward more nationally syndicated content. Meanwhile, Watkins brings a recognizable literary voice to Baltimore Public Media’s weekday lineup.
