Greg Papa Reportedly Hospitalized With Heart Failure

"All of your love and support has greatly helped us get past the many health obstacles we have faced. Together we will get past the next challenge. Love you all and thank you."

Greg Papa’s comeback trail just hit another obstacle. The 49ers’ longtime radio voice is reportedly back in the hospital, now battling advanced heart failure.

What We Know: Papa, 63, has been hospitalized with advanced heart failure, according to the San Francisco Standard. The setback follows a spring bone marrow transplant for leukemia, diagnosed last summer. That earlier fight included a 78-day hospital stay, an induced coma and a respirator. Meanwhile, KNBR recently announced Papa’s return to its lineup with a new midday show, Lunch With Papa alongside John Lund.

What They Said: Greg Papa (via The San Francisco Standard): “A week after that beautiful night in Novato, I experienced another health setback. My genetic heart condition Cardiomyopathy has greatly worsened due to the bone marrow transplant. The Advanced Heart Failure team at UCSF performed a diagnostic procedure Tuesday morning for a clearer picture of the condition of the heart. All of your love and support has greatly helped us get past the many health obstacles we have faced. Together we will get past the next challenge. Love you all and thank you.”

What Remains Unclear: How long Papa’s UCSF treatment will last is still unknown. He missed the 49ers’ season-opening trip to Australia, where Guy Haberman filled in. Whether his new KNBR show proceeds on schedule is now in question, too. So is his timeline for rejoining 49ers broadcasts this season.

What It Means: Papa’s setback highlights just how fragile his comeback has been. Even so, KNBR’s decision to bring him back shows real institutional support following the company cutting Papa earlier this summer. For now, fans and colleagues are left waiting on updates. Meanwhile, the 49ers’ season rolls on without their familiar voice.
