Troy Aikman Admits No Current Contract Extension Talks With ESPN

"I thought something would be done prior to the start of this season. I’ve never gone into a last year of a contract ever since I signed with the Dallas Cowboys."

Date:

Joe Buck just secured his ESPN future. Troy Aikman’s remains open as the Monday Night Football analyst revealed he has yet to begin extension discussions with the network.

What We Know: Aikman’s current ESPN contract expires after this season. It’s also the network’s first season broadcasting the Super Bowl. Buck, meanwhile, signed a six-year deal worth more than $100 million. The two have called games together since 2002, first at FOX Sports and now at ESPN since 2022.

What They Said: Troy Aikman (via The Sports Media Podcast): “I thought something would be done prior to the start of this season. I’ve never gone into a last year of a contract ever since I signed with the Dallas Cowboys. So I thought that it would be done. It’s not. When it might get done, if it gets done, is anybody’s guess, and it’s just not something that I’m really putting a lot of energy into.”

What Remains Unclear: No timeline exists for a new Aikman deal. With Tony Romo’s future hanging in the balance with CBS Sports and Greg Olsen also set to become a free agent, the timing is interesting.

What It Means: The pairing’s fate now hangs over ESPN’s biggest NFL season yet. Losing Aikman could disrupt one of the NFL’s longest-running broadcast duos. For now, though, Aikman insists he isn’t putting much energy into worrying about it. Buck and Aikman will call Giants-Rams together tonight regardless.
