John Sterling To Skip 25-30 Yankees Games In 2nd Half Of Season

Date:

The work load will get a lot lighter for John Sterling in the second half of the season. Andrew Marchand reports the radio voice of the New York Yankees is taking a significant portion of the team’s road trips off after the all-star break.

Sterling will sit out 25-30 road games. He says no one should read anything into the decision.

“It is just to recharge my batteries,” John Sterling told The New York Post. “I’ve been doing road games with teams for 52 years. I love this game, but I hate being on the road.”

This represents a change of heart for John Sterling. At the beginning of the 2022 season, WFAN brass publicly stated that they expected he and Suzyn Waldman to call every game on the schedule.

Sterling will continue to call every home game. He is also expected to call every series in Boston, Baltimore, and Queens. He says the plan and the reduced schedule was inspired by his friend Howie Rose, who is taking a similar tact with the Mets.

WFAN and the Yankees are working on a list of fill-in candidates. YES/ESPN’s Ryan Ruocco, Yankees’ digital reporter and Jomboy host Justin Shackil, Yankees Spanish language play-by-player Rickie Ricardo and radio analyst Suzyn Waldman have all been mentioned.
