Longtime 94WIP morning co-host Al Morganti was awarded the 2022 Elmer Ferguson Award, given annually to a hockey reporter “to recognize distinguished members of the newspaper profession whose words have brought honor to journalism and to hockey”. He accepted the award Monday night, and recapped the evening with colleague Angelo Cataldi this morning.
“It was cool,” Morganti said. “It was fun. There were a lot of people that I knew, so that was good. Lot of people from back home, so that was good.”
When asked about his speech, Morganti said he was focused on keeping it brief.
“Yeah, it was short. It was good. You can tell people just wanna get the hell out, so I managed to make it short enough that everyone didn’t get bored.”
Morganti’s co-worker, Keith Jones, told Cataldi that the speech was fantastic, but Morganti assumed Jones didn’t tell the whole story.
“I said ‘I’m usually on TV — which is cool — but now I have a live audience and I’m nervous. I asked my friends for some advice and they said pretend like you’re talking to your dog. Well, they won’t let a dog in here, so I brought Jonesy’.”
Morganti will return from Toronto to co-host Wednesdays show on 94WIP, which he jokingly celebrated because Cataldi will be taking the day off.
