Dan Patrick is widely regarded as one of the best — if not thee best — interviewer in sports media, and he gave a tidbit to a caller on Friday’s edition of The Dan Patrick Show.
A caller said he used to think “W.W.D.D” for “What Would Dan Do” before he interviewed guests, which led to a great interview with former NFL quarterback Jake Plummer. Patrick then revealed what his strategy was when it comes to interviewing.
“I find that a lot of these athletes — or former athletes — like to be challenged. They’re competitors and you’re trying to get them interested in something. That’s the goal. That’s the challenge,” Patrick said. “When Nick Saban comes on, (I think) ‘How do I approach this so it’s not like an SEC press conference?’
“If you’re talking to someone who’s retired, you still wanna get that competition going in them. Going at them, trying to get those answers. They wanna be engaged as well. They do interviews all the time. What makes you different?”
Patrick has seen several interviews go viral over his illustrious career, with his insightful and simple questions being regarded as the key to receiving great answers.
