The highly-anticipated moment for French superstar Victor Wembanyama turned out to be a huge moment for ESPN and ABC last Thursday.
The interest in Wembanyama going first overall to the San Antonio Spurs set the tone for the night. The 2023 NBA Draft averaged 3.74 million viewers, a 23% increase over the previous year. It was the best viewership for the NBA Draft on record.

The previous record was 3.738 million viewers in 2015.
When commissioner Adam Silver announced Wemby was being selected by the Spurs, the peak audience was 6.09 million. The first round averaged 4.93 million, with ESPN averaging 2.72 million.
