Dan Patrick created headlines yesterday. He may not have anticipated the kind of reaction him saying that he would leave his radio show after 2027 would generate, but on Friday, he said that he didn’t mean to set of a retirement tour.
“I got phone calls yesterday. I got text messages,” he said. “My wife said, ‘are you retiring?’. I go ‘in four and a half years’. She goes, ‘Well, why would you announce that?’. I said, ‘I was announcing a contract extension.’”
Producer Seton O’Conner asked an important question.
“Did you say that yesterday?”
Patrick said that he has a new deal with FOX Sports Radio, iHeartRadio and Peacock and his intention is that it will be the last one he signs. O’Conner swears that information was not mentioned on Wednesday’s show.
Patrick mentioned that in coverage of his announcement, he was happy to see how much the media focused on his joke about wearing a wig. On Wednesday, he said that in 2027, he plans to turn off his mic and give his hair piece to executive producer Todd Fritz.
While Patrick does not, in reality, wear a hairpiece, he says that he “loved that” that line was included in every article.
Dan Patrick may have wanted the focus to be on his contract extension, but talk of retirement already had the Danettes throwing around ideas for a final show in 2027. Patrick promised no guests on the last show so that he would have plenty of time to tell stories.
In the meantime, there are options to spice up future broadcasts.
“People did reach out, very, very generously, saying ‘you got to do this before you retire’.”
He told the audience and his crew that he would not reveal what the offers were on air, but that the show will have the opportunity to broadcast from some cool places and experience som unique events in the next four years.
