Alex Faust Reportedly Will Replace Bob Costas On TNT Sports’ MLB Postseason Coverage

"Costas, who had been with the network since 2020, retired from MLB play-by-play after calling last year’s American League Division Series between the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals"

Date:

Alex Faust is stepping into one of the most prestigious play-by-play chairs in baseball broadcasting. According to The Athletic, Faust will succeed Bob Costas as the voice of TNT Sports’ MLB postseason coverage, beginning with this October’s playoffs.

Costas, who had been with the network since 2020, retired from MLB play-by-play after calling last year’s American League Division Series. His exit left a significant void. One that TNT Sports appears ready to fill with a broadcaster who has quickly climbed the national ranks.

Faust, 36, is no stranger to high-profile assignments. He has been part of TNT Sports’ NHL coverage and recently handled French Open matches for the network. Baseball fans have also heard his work as the voice of Friday Night MLB on Apple TV+. In addition, Faust serves as the radio voice of the New York Rangers.

A TNT Sports spokesperson declined to comment on the reported move by The Athletic.

The network’s MLB depth chart will otherwise remain stable. Brian Anderson continues in his role as the top play-by-play voice. Anderson will again team with Ron Darling and Jeff Francoeur for the National League Championship Series. For the NLDS, Anderson is expected to call games with Francoeur, while Darling will partner with Faust.

Costas’ hire in 2020 was a headline move for then-TNT Sports boss Jeff Zucker, who brought in one of the most recognizable names in baseball broadcasting. Prior to Costas’ arrival, Don Orsillo — now the TV voice of the San Diego Padres — held the No. 2 spot behind Anderson.

Costas explained why he stepped away on a podcast with Sports Media Watch earlier this year. He delved into the backstory of how he arrived at the decision to retire from play-by-play following the 2024 MLB postseason. In a wide-ranging interview, he reflected on his journey and the factors that led to his choice.

“The TBS portion of my career is a tiny chip in a much larger mosaic,” explained Costas. “We all want to end on a grace note. This is not the end of my broadcasting career, but it most definitely was going to be the end of my play-by-play career. By my own design. Even had I been asked back and the baseball network [MLB Network] had wanted me to do more games, which they do, I said, No. This is going to be the end, and it didn’t quite turn out the way I wanted to.”

Replacing a legend is never simple, but Faust has steadily built credibility in multiple sports and platforms. His presence allows TNT Sports to maintain continuity in its MLB coverage while also injecting a younger voice into the mix.
