San Francisco 49ers play by play voice and KNBR host Greg Papa’s health fight isn’t over. Now the question is whether it ever lets him back on the air.
What We Know: Papa was diagnosed with leukemia in July 2025 and underwent a bone marrow transplant this spring. Afterward, he faced life-threatening complications, including collapsed lungs, blood clots, and a 78-day hospital stay. He’s since gone home cancer-free, though doctors remain unsure how much lung function he’ll regain. Papa has called 49ers games since 2019 and hosted a KNBR midday show for years. In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Papa said he could return to his midday KNBR talk show, working from his remote studio as he did last year, when he was undergoing chemotherapy. However, calling 49ers games remains in limbo.

They looked me in the eye and said, ‘We don’t know whether you will ever get out of here.’ My recovery was remarkable. So I will not say I cannot do it.”
What Remains Unclear: According to Papa, his doctors don’t know how much lung capacity rehab will restore his abilities for on-air performance. Consequently, a booth return remains far from guaranteed, even as he weighs rejoining KNBR’s show remotely. No firm timeline exists for either comeback.
What It Means: Greg Papa is a fighter. However, his continued battle could keep him off the microphone for now. His remote hosting could resume first, given his experience broadcasting through chemotherapy last year. However, calling games demands travel and stamina his lungs may not yet support. Ultimately, Papa insists he’ll set his own timeline, not his illness. We wish him the absolute best and strength through his continued battle.
