Former ESPN NHL Analyst Barry Melrose Passes Away At Age 70

"Melrose's voice and character defined much of the NHL coverage on ESPN."

Date:

Barry Melrose has died. The longtime ESPN hockey analyst and former NHL coach was 70.

What We Know: According to a statement by ESPN, Melrose died Wednesday. His wife, Cindy, shared the news with ESPN’s Steve Levy. Melrose first joined ESPN in 1996 and remained there until Parkinson’s disease forced his retirement in 2023. In between, he briefly left to coach the Tampa Bay Lightning for 16 games in 2008. He also led the Los Angeles Kings to the 1993 Stanley Cup Final and finished with an 84-108-29 coaching record.

What’s At Stake: Melrose’s voice and character defined much of the NHL coverage on ESPN. A standout talent that brought experience both in the playing and coaching ranks, Melrose elevated the level of insight and analysis that made ESPN a hockey destination for American audiences for generations.

What Remains Unclear: Funeral or memorial arrangements have not yet been announced. Meanwhile, ESPN has not detailed how it plans to honor Melrose on-air. Additionally, specifics about his health in the years following his 2023 diagnosis remain private.

What It Means: Melrose’s death closes a defining chapter for ESPN’s hockey coverage, where his mullet, goatee and flashy suits became fan favorites. Alongside Levy, Linda Cohn and John Buccigross, he helped shape the network’s playoff and All-Star Game coverage for over two decades. Consequently, his absence leaves a distinct personality void heading into this season’s NHL coverage. His legacy, however, spans far beyond the desk — from Medicine Hat’s 1987 Memorial Cup title to Adirondack’s 1991 Calder Cup.
