Former King Features Chairman and President Joseph D’Angelo Dies at 96

"Joe was a giant of the syndication industry and a great Hearst executive."

Date:

Joseph F. D’Angelo, who led King Features Syndicate for Hearst through decades of growth, died October 13th in Palm Harbor, Florida. He was 96 years old.

What We Know: D’Angelo joined King Features in 1965 as assistant treasurer and controller. From there, he became president in 1973 and chairman in 1997, retiring in 1998. Throughout his tenure, King Features landed The Family Circus, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Dennis the Menace. Additionally, the company acquired the Cowles and North America syndicates in the 1980s, becoming the world’s largest newspaper syndicate. He also helped complete the animated film Yellow Submarine with The Beatles, which premiered in 1968.

What They Said: “Joe helped define the modern syndication business, expanding King Features through acquisitions, new licensing opportunities and innovative distribution strategies that brought some of the world’s most beloved characters and creators to millions of readers. He forged relationships, particularly with the comic creators that made them feel a part of King Features and Hearst rather than independent contractors who simply chose King to distribute their creations. He will be greatly missed.” – Frank A. Bennack Jr., executive vice chairman and former CEO of Hearst.

“Joe was a giant of the syndication industry and a great Hearst executive. Our sincerest condolences go to Marcia and his entire family.” – Steven R. Swartz, CEO and President of Hearst.

What Remains Unclear: Thomas B. Dobies Funeral Home in Tarpon Springs is still finalizing arrangements. So far, the family has not set a public service date. For now, they are sharing few details beyond requesting donations to La Salle Academy.

What It Means: Ultimately, D’Angelo’s deals shaped syndication for generations of readers and creators. Meanwhile, his relationship-first approach became a model other executives followed. As a result, comics and columns he brought to King Features remain household names today. In short, the industry loses one of its defining figures. He is survived by his wife, Marcia, son Joe D’Angelo, Jr. (Xperi SVP), and five grandchildren.
