John Schriffen Departs Chicago White Sox Television Booth

"As his contract comes to an end, we believe this is the appropriate time to evaluate the direction of our broadcasts and determine what is best for the organization and our fans moving forward."

Date:

The Chicago White Sox are moving on from John Schriffen. The club told its lead TV play-by-play voice it will not extend his contract.

What We Know: Schriffen, 42, took over as the team’s main television play-by-play broadcaster before the 2024 season. He signed a multi-year deal in January 2024, replacing Jason Benetti, who departed to lead Detroit Tigers broadcasts. Meanwhile, the White Sox said a national search for his replacement begins immediately. Notably, it marks the organization’s second play-by-play search in three years.

What They Said: Brooks Boyer, the organization’s executive vice president, chief revenue/marketing officer: “John has been a true professional throughout his three seasons with the White Sox, bringing energy, enthusiasm, and a distinctive style to our broadcasts. As his contract comes to an end, we believe this is the appropriate time to evaluate the direction of our broadcasts and determine what is best for the organization and our fans moving forward.”

Brooks Boyer, the organization’s executive vice president, chief revenue/marketing officer: “We are appreciative of John’s contributions and the connection he built with our fanbase. We wish him continued success in his future endeavors.”

What Remains Unclear: However, the White Sox have not named any candidates for the job. The club also did not explain what new direction it wants its broadcasts to take. Additionally, the announcement did not include a statement from Schriffen. Similarly, his next career move remains unknown.

What It Means: Ultimately, the White Sox are hitting reset on their TV booth again. Consequently, Chicago fans will hear a third lead TV voice since 2023. For Schriffen, three seasons in a major market should keep him in demand.
