Troy Aikman Says He’s 50/50 On Returning To Television Next Season

"I guess I’m still getting my head around how I got to this position."

Date:

Troy Aikman says there’s a “50-50 chance” he won’t be on TV next year. The ESPN analyst made the prediction Wednesday at Peter King’s book signing in Dallas, per Tim Cowlishaw of the Dallas Morning News.

What We Know: Aikman’s Monday Night Football contract expires after the 2026 NFL season. So far, ESPN has not approached him about an extension. In contrast, Joe Buck, his booth partner of 25 seasons, signed a six-year, $108 million extension last month. That gap sparked a pregame argument two weeks ago. This has led to Aikman stating he’s looking ahead to next season likely not with ESPN. While at a book signing for former Sports Illustrated writer Peter King, Aikman shared his thoughts on returning to broadcasting next season.

What They Said: Troy Aikman: “I think there is a chance, I’d probably say now 50-50 would be my guess.”

Troy Aikman: “I guess I’m still getting my head around how I got to this position.”

What Remains Unclear: Aikman’s next landing spot is uncertain. Notably, the top analyst chairs elsewhere are filled. CBS committed to JJ Watt, while Tom Brady and Cris Collinsworth stay at FOX Sports and NBC. Additionally, Aikman consulted for the Dolphins this offseason. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan earlier this week he “would and could” hire Troy Aikman to be a part of the organization.

What It Means: For now, Aikman’s future may run through Dallas. After all, he won three Super Bowls in 12 seasons with the Cowboys. Still, he and Buck must share the booth through the Super Bowl. As a result, every broadcast now carries an added layer of tension.
