Phil Simms Believes Joe Buck, Troy Aikman Tension Will Be Difficult To “Backtrack” On

"I don't quite know why it got that bad, but it did. It's hard to backtrack when those things happen."

Date:

Phil Simms believes the rift between Joe Buck and Troy Aikman may be hard to repair. Still, he thinks the duo just delivered one of its best broadcasts on ESPN.

What We Know: Simms discussed the situation Wednesday on WFAN’s Boomer & Gio. Meanwhile, Buck recently signed a six-year ESPN extension worth roughly $108 million. In contrast, Aikman’s five-year deal expires after Super Bowl LXI on February 14. Additionally, the pair reportedly clashed in the booth before an October broadcast. Aikman has been public about his disappointment in his contract discussions with ESPN while Buck has remained silent since. Simms was asked on WFAN Wednesday his thoughts on if the matter could be resolved.

What They Said: (All quotes via WFAN’s Boomer & Gio):

Phil Simms says it’s going to be difficult for Joe Buck and Troy Aikman to figure this situation out: “Those things happen. I don’t quite know why it got that bad, but it did. It’s hard to backtrack when those things happen.”

Phil Simms feels Joe Buck and Troy Aikman had one of their best games this past Monday: “One of the best games I’ve heard them broadcast was this past Monday night with the Bears in Seattle. There were some funny moments because I think they were sitting there watching the game going, “Wow, this game is unbelievable.” I’m listening and I actually thought they’re going to break them up. I think they do a good job. I do enjoy listening to them.”

What Remains Unclear: ESPN has not responded for comment following the reported altercation. The network also has not publicly commented on the tension between Aikman and Buck or whether they will move forward with or without Aikman’s services this season.

What It Means: Ultimately, Simms highlights the central tension of this story. On the air, Buck and Aikman still sound like the NFL’s premier booth. Off the air, though, the relationship appears strained. Consequently, ESPN’s first Super Bowl could double as the duo’s final broadcast.
