Spotify is expanding its partnership with United Airlines, bringing personalized streaming to seatback screens. The new feature allows passengers to access their accounts during flights.
What We Know: Announced November 5, the rollout makes United the first airline offering personal Spotify account access through seatback screens, according to United. The expansion follows their June 2025 partnership, which introduced over 450 hours of curated content. Since then, over 2.3 million passengers have consumed more than 1.9 million hours of programming. The feature is now rolling out on United aircraft equipped with Starlink Wi-Fi. By scanning a QR code, passengers can access saved playlists, recommendations, Spotify DJ and music videos. Meanwhile, audio continues playing while travelers browse other seatback features, including flight maps. Phones can also control playback.
What They Said: “Bringing personal Spotify accounts to United seatback screens is a major milestone, creating a new way to experience Spotify in flight. With a quick QR code scan, passengers can bring their personalized Spotify experience to the screen in front of them—their recommendations, saved library, and favorite songs, podcasts, audiobooks, and videos—and enjoy it all on a big screen at 35,000 feet.”-Ian Geller, VP of Business Development at Spotify.
What Remains Unclear: The companies haven’t disclosed how many aircraft currently support the feature or provided a fleetwide completion date. They also haven’t detailed which playback features will differ between Free and Premium subscribers.
What It Means: The expansion reflects growing competition among airlines to improve passenger experiences through digital entertainment. American Airlines previously introduced Apple Music streaming, while Delta offers curated YouTube Music playlists. United’s latest offering could encourage competitors to pursue similar partnerships as airlines invest in connectivity and personalized services. It also demonstrates how improved inflight Wi-Fi is creating opportunities for deeper integration between airlines and streaming platforms.
