Don Martin: Stations Better Hire ‘Damn Good Producers’

Date:

Don Martin shared a lot of wisdom on the debut episode of The Jason Barrett Podcast. No one can question the FOX Sports Radio and iHeartMedia Sports boss’s passion for the industry.

He told Jason Barrett that he wants to work with passionate people. That is how you create great radio.

“If you’re starting your talent, you’ve got the wrong talent,” Martin said after referring to the best hosts as “electrically charged.”

He also noted that the best hosts cannot create great radio on their own. Management has to invest in the development of the people behind the glass too.

“You hire damn good producers, because those are the folks that people don’t see, don’t hear that make the magic happen,” he said. “They understand how to get into the talent’s head and make it feel like it’s their idea.”

The future of sports radio is something Don Martin loves to discuss. He told Barrett that managers have to look at hiring a producer as the first step in strengthening their own future.

“Great producers become great program directors who become great general managers and hopefully one day will become president of a market. So, you better be teaching your producers how to manage talent.”

New episodes of The Jason Barrett Podcast debut Tuesday mornings on BarrettSportsMedia.com and major podcast platforms.
