CBS News Adds Ariel Levy as 60 Minutes Contributor

Date:

CBS News is adding Ariel Levy to 60 Minutes as a contributor for the newsmagazine’s upcoming 59th season. The longtime The New Yorker writer joins the program as it completes its revamped lineup.

What We Know: Levy joins 60 Minutes after nearly three decades of reporting for New York magazine and The New Yorker. She joined The New Yorker as a staff writer in 2008 after spending 12 years at New York magazine. Levy has covered culture, gender, sexuality, health, and other topics throughout her career. Her 2013 New Yorker essay “Thanksgiving in Mongolia” won a National Magazine Award.

Her addition follows a major overhaul of 60 Minutes ahead of Season 59. Executive Producer Nick Bilton previously announced Ross Douthat, Sebastian Junger, Gianna Toboni and Trevor Phillips as contributors or correspondents. Norah O’Donnell will also serve as a correspondent, joining Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker and Jon Wertheim.

What They Said: “Ariel is an astonishingly original writer and reporter, fearlessly going to far-flung places and exploring sensitive topics that have driven consequential debates. For nearly three decades, first at New York magazine and then at The New Yorker, she has reported on culture, gender, sexuality, health and the people and ideas shaping modern life in a way that is entirely unique.” -60 Minutes Executive Producer Nick Bilton

What Remains Unclear: CBS News hasn’t detailed Levy’s first assignments or when viewers can expect her first report. The network also hasn’t indicated whether she will appear regularly on Sunday broadcasts or contribute primarily to specific features.

What It Means: Levy gives Bilton another accomplished print journalist with a distinctive reporting background. Moreover, her addition appears to complete the list of correspondents and contributors for 60 Minutes‘ 59th season, giving the revamped program a full roster ahead of its return.
