Fox President Notes Network Will Prioritize Renewing “Core” Sports Rights Deals

"Clearly the renewal of these rights, with baseball coming up as the earliest [in 2028], is going to be a key aspect of the entirety of Fox to renew what are core rights to us."

Date:

Fox President and COO John Nallen addressed the network’s NFL ties at Goldman Sachs’ Communacopia + Technology Conference on Wednesday. He downplayed any urgency around an early rights renewal with the NFL while saying the network will prioritize its core rights deals for renewal.

What We Know: Fox signed an 11-year NFL agreement in 2021, and the deal carries an opt-out after the 2029 season. Nallen highlighted two new game windows for the ’27 season. In addition, a Munich-fed Week 10 tripleheader and a new Week 15 Saturday game. Starting this Sunday, Fox becomes the NFL’s Mexico broadcaster of record for three seasons. CEO Lachlan Murdoch confirmed in August that Fox won’t amend the deal before the opt-out window arrives.

What They Said: John Nallen, Fox President & COO: “Beginning Sunday, we will be the broadcaster of record for the NFL in Mexico for the next three seasons. You look at the last 30 years, we’ve produced over a hundred games a season, every season, for the NFL. My expectation is that’s going to continue for the foreseeable future.”

John Nallen, Fox President & COO: “Clearly the renewal of these rights, with baseball coming up as the earliest [in 2028], is going to be a key aspect of the entirety of Fox to renew what are core rights to us.”

What Remains Unclear: Fox hasn’t committed firmly to the FIFA World Cup beyond 2026. Nallen said Fox wants 2030 and 2034 rights, yet bidding has yet to begin. Meanwhile, MLB renewal talks loom as the earliest core deal, starting in 2028.

What It Means: Fox is signaling patience over panic. Strategy over haste. Rather than potentially overpay early, the network is banking on its NFL track record. Moreover their expanding footprint to secure long-term value across its “core” sports portfolio. Whether or not Fox will be able to retain any many deals as it always had is yet to be seen.
