Joe Buck wants Troy Aikman beside him on Monday Night Football for the long term. Now, the ESPN voice says he’s hopeful a new deal gets done.
What We Know: Earlier this month, Buck agreed to a six-year extension with ESPN worth roughly $108 million. The deal keeps him on Monday Night Football through 2031. Meanwhile, Aikman’s contract expires after Super Bowl LXI in February. Notably, the pair have called games together since 2002, including six Super Bowls at FOX Sports. During an appearance on 97.5 The Fanatic, Buck says he’s hopeful the two sides can reach an extension.
What They Said: (All quotes via 97.5 The Fanatic):
Joe Buck on his relationship with Troy Aikman: “I legitimately love the guy like a brother. We’re basically the same age. I’m 57. He’s 59. We’ve both been through divorce. We both are girl dads. 25 years, you’re sharing a lot of life together. Forget games and the booth and all that stuff.”
Joe Buck is hopeful Troy Aikman extends with ESPN: “I hope so. Both of us were up, and it wasn’t like we were doing some national signing day where we walk in arm in arm and then sign contracts at the same time. We’ve always kind of kept that stuff separate. I’m obviously hopeful to say the least, that something gets done. But that’s kind of his world and ESPN’s world. I’ve got to kind of mind my own yard in that stuff. I think that’s the best way to be.”
What Remains Unclear: However, Aikman’s future is far less settled. According to reports, Aikman, who earns roughly $18 million annually, has not received a long-term offer. Whether or not ESPN will be investigating other potential analysts is unknown. Following this season, both Greg Olsen with FOX Sports and Kirk Herbstreit with Prime Video are up for contract renewals.
What It Means: Ultimately, ESPN faces a pivotal decision. Buck and Aikman are the longest-tenured NFL broadcast team. Furthermore, they will call ESPN’s first Super Bowl this February. In short, splitting them after that milestone would reshape Monday Night Football’s top booth.
