Tony Dungy Knew Changes Were Coming With Football Night in America on NBC Sports

"There were things that they didn't want me to talk about. We had a good understanding. They knew who I was when I got hired, and it is what it is."

Date:

Tony Dungy says he knew his time at NBC Sports was coming to an end. In fact, the Hall of Famer sensed it before the network ever delivered the news.

What We Know: Dungy discussed his Football Night in America exit during a recent appearance on The Sage Steele Show. He joined NBC after retiring as Indianapolis Colts head coach in 2009, ultimately spending 17 seasons there. Then in March, he confirmed on X that he would not return to the show this fall. Meanwhile, NBC reportedly planned to revamp the program, possibly taking it on the road all season. While he didn’t say his dismissal was due to his personal and outward religious beliefs, Dungy did hint that there was some items NBC Sports brass wished he would withhold.

What They Said: (All quotes via The Sage Steele Show):

Tony Dungy felt his dismissal was coming on Football Night in America: “I kind of knew that was going to be the case. They came to me and Rodney [Harrison] and said they wanted to get a little younger and change the voices. They appreciated what we had done, but they were moving on and reshaping the show. So it was tough, but that’s has happened before in my football career.”

Tony Dungy saw signs his time with NBC Sports was likely coming to an end: “I just knew that the direction that they wanted to go with the show. Some of the things that had happened there, and the fact that you really don’t stay 15-20 years usually at one place. I just felt like it was coming.”

Tony Dungy on being outward with your religious beliefs and working in media: “There are some things that I guess in TV, especially they want you to be careful because they want to attract everybody. They want to have an audience of everyone. They don’t always appreciate you speaking about your faith. But for me, I’m always going to do that. I’m going to try to do it in a respectful way, but people are going to know that I’m a Christian. That that part is never going to leave. I am pro-life, and I’m not going to be ashamed to say that.”

Tony Dungy said he felt he has a good understanding about being public with his beliefs with NBC Sports: “There were things that they didn’t want me to talk about. We had a good understanding. They knew who I was when I got hired, and it is what it is.”

What Remains Unclear: However, Dungy has not revealed his next career move. He previously said it could involve football, broadcasting, or church and community outreach. Additionally, NBC has not provided comment on Dungy’s appearance.

What It Means: Ultimately, Dungy’s comments show veteran talent often reads the signs before networks make it official. Moreover, he told Steele he will keep speaking openly about his faith, even when TV prefers caution. Notably, he said NBC knew who he was when it hired him. As a result, Dungy appears at peace with the decision and focused on what comes next.
