Why College GameDay Is a Blueprint for News/Talk Radio Success

It’s about belonging. Viewers feel like they’re part of something bigger than themselves. The best News/Talk stations create that same feeling. They become a gathering place for listeners who share common interests, concerns, passions and experiences.

Date:

As a huge college football fan, I’ve noticed two interesting data points in recent weeks. First, college football ratings are down 11% so far this year. Second, ESPN’s premier pregame show, College GameDay, remains a monster. College GameDay is averaging 2.83 million viewers through the first four weeks, which is 5% above the record 2025 season average of 2.7 million viewers. Weeks 2-4 each brought GameDay’s most-watched episode of that respective week in program history.

Now, how does any of this apply to News/Talk radio?

It’s further proof that College GameDay has become a destination unto itself. Millions of people tune in before a single snap is played. That’s an incredible achievement in today’s fractured media environment, and News/Talk radio should study it closely.

A Formula News/Talk Radio Knows Well

Large personalities, community engagement and a local feel delivered to a national audience. Sound familiar? That’s also the formula behind many of the best News/Talk radio stations in America.

I’ve seen the rumors about what Pat McAfee might make in his next ESPN contract, and as far as I’m concerned, he will be worth every penny. Because of changing viewer habits and cord-cutting, ESPN’s original programming doesn’t have the juice it had when I was a kid in the 1990s and early 2000s, locked into SportsCenter for the previous night’s game results and highlights. Technology has changed so much about how we consume content and get our information.

College GameDay continues to buck that trend, and McAfee’s arrival as the show’s new lightning rod personality has been a major reason why. Whether you love him or hate him, he sparks conversation, opinions and engagement — exactly what great broadcasters have always done.

Local Flavor, National Appeal

Add in staples such as Rece Davis and Kirk Herbstreit and legendary coaches like Nick Saban, and you have a community of like-minded people participating in an annual ritual. That’s part of the show’s genius. One week it’s Eugene. The next it’s Columbus. Then Tuscaloosa or Austin. Every fan base gets its moment in the spotlight.

The show feels local to the people attending in person while still appealing to millions across the country. That’s a balancing act News/Talk radio has wrestled with for decades, and GameDay may do it better than anyone in media. It reminds us that local doesn’t limit your reach. In many cases, local is what makes people care in the first place.

Every week, the show creates moments through the signs, guest pickers, crowd shots and emotional stories, and it all comes together. Even when it’s not their team, millions tune in every week and feel invested in what’s happening on the show. They’re learning something. They’re having fun. They’re watching huge personalities interact with an audience they view as very similar to themselves.

Habit, Belonging and the Lesson for Radio

What News/Talk has always owned is habit. Just as millions of fans wake up Saturday morning, pour a cup of coffee and turn on College GameDay, great radio stations become part of a listener’s daily routine.

But habits aren’t created by information alone. They’re created by personalities, relationships, shared experiences and community. That’s why College GameDay’s success isn’t really about football. It’s about belonging. Viewers feel like they’re part of something bigger than themselves.

The best News/Talk stations create that same feeling. They become a gathering place for listeners who share common interests, concerns, passions and experiences.

In an era obsessed with clicks, downloads and algorithms, College GameDay reminds us that the most successful media brands still rely on something much simpler: giving people a reason to show up and a reason to come back tomorrow.

And that’s a lesson that extends far beyond sports.
