Cumulus Media has promoted Kathy “KB” Brown to VP/Urban Formats. The move, effective immediately, gives her a national role across 40 Urban stations.
What We Know: Brown will oversee programming across four formats: Urban Mainstream, Urban AC, Classic Hip Hop, and Gospel. She joined Cumulus in 2017 and works out of Charleston, SC. There, she serves as Program Director and on-air talent for Z93 JAMZ/WWWZ-FM and Magic 107.3/WMGL-FM. Importantly, she will keep both of those roles.
What They Said: Brian Philips, Chief Programming Officer, Cumulus: “By virtue of her veteran major-market leadership skills and perennial high achievement, KB became the clear choice of both our programming leaders and her peers in the Cumulus Urban fleet. Kathy already wears much programming responsibility gracefully and successfully in her Charleston role and in the region. This confirms our trust in her proven steady guidance and her stellar reputation within Cumulus.”
Kathy Brown: “I am excited to join the Cumulus senior content leadership team. I am fortunate to support a stellar group of Urban programmers who oversee legendary stations. We will continue our legacy of excellence.”
What Remains Unclear: The release did not explain how Brown will balance national duties with her Charleston workload. The release also offered no word on additional support staff for her local stations.
What It Means: Cumulus is leaning on a proven major-market programmer. Before Cumulus, Brown led iHeartMedia Urban stations KMJM-FM and KATZ-FM in St. Louis. Earlier, she ran Radio One’s seven-station Washington-Baltimore cluster and served as APD at Atlanta’s V103. As a result, the company’s Urban fleet gains a national leader with deep format roots.
