Former NHL Player, MSG Network Analyst Ron Duguay Dies At 69

"Ron’s signature skating style — with his hair flowing as he moved down the ice — captivated the (Madison Square) Garden faithful."

Date:

Ron Duguay, a New York Rangers fan favorite and longtime MSG Network analyst, has died of cancer. He was 69.

What We Know: The Rangers confirmed Thursday that Duguay’s family informed the team of his death. Duguay spent 12 years as a Rangers analyst on MSG Network after his playing days. Before that, he played eight seasons in New York, including a run to the 1979 Stanley Cup Final. Overall, he tallied 620 points in 860 regular-season games with the Rangers, Red Wings, Kings and Penguins. The former forward was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer that he told the New York Post originated in the colon, adding that he battled the disease for more than a year while losing his appendix and gallbladder.

What They Said: Statement by the New York Rangers: “The New York Rangers organization mourns the loss of Ron Duguay, one of the most popular players in franchise history. Ron’s signature skating style — with his hair flowing as he moved down the ice — captivated the (Madison Square) Garden faithful, and his skill, tenacity and charisma earned him the admiration of all New Yorkers. We join the hockey community in sending our condolences to Ron’s friends, family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

NHL Statement: “The NHL mourns the passing of Ron Duguay, a charismatic figure who made a lasting impression on the game. We extend our deepest condolences to Ron’s family, friends and the many fans who admired him throughout the hockey community.”

What Remains Unclear: The release did not specify when Duguay passed. In addition, it’s unknown how the Rangers may celebrate his memory this season.

What It Means: Duguay’s death removes a rare link between the Rangers’ on-ice past and their broadcast present. After the Rangers drafted him 13th overall in 1977, he became a 1981-82 All-Star and a Garden icon. Later, he brought that connection to MSG Network viewers for more than a decade. As a result, Rangers fans lose both a former star and a familiar voice.
