Hip-Hop Pioneer Kool DJ Red Alert Announces Radio Retirement

Date:

After more than four decades on New York radio, Kool DJ Red Alert is preparing to sign off. The hip-hop pioneer will retire from MediaCo-owned Adult R&B station WBLS (107.5) and hip-hop station Hot 97 (WQHT).

What We Know: Frederick Crute, better known as Kool DJ Red Alert, announced his retirement in a November 2 Instagram video. According to 24Hip-Hop, he’ll close his broadcasting career with a four-hour WBLS mix on November 30. Meanwhile, Sony Hall in New York City will host a November 24 gala celebrating his 50th DJ anniversary and upcoming 70th birthday. Red Alert began his commercial radio career at 98.7 Kiss-FM in 1983 after influential DJ Afrika Bambaataa recommended him to program director and 2024 Radio Hall of Fame inductee Barry Mayo. His mixes helped introduce artists including De La Soul and Queen Latifah to wider audiences. He joined Hot 97 in 1994, later worked at Power 105.1. He later returned to Kiss-FM before moving to WBLS following the stations’ 2012 merger. Additionally, the hip hop legend plans to continue DJing at live events and community celebrations.

What they Said: “Big up and respect to all. Today I stand before you to announce that I’m saying farewell to radio. It has been an honor in my life to share the airwaves with the community for over four decades. To every listener, artist, co-worker, peer and radio stations that have welcomed me throughout this incredible journey. May I say thank you. Thank you so much.”-Frederick Crute

The love, the memories, the music and the connection we all have shared and will always hold a special place in my heart. Although I am stepping away from radio, my passion for music and entertainment remains strong. I will continue to bring the sounds, the energy, and the vibe to the people through DJing special events, and community celebrations.”-Frederick Crute

What Remains Unclear: MediaCo hasn’t announced who will replace Red Alert on WBLS and Hot 97. Likewise, whether the stations will continue his existing mix shows with different DJs is unknown. Additionally, Red Alert hasn’t shared specific dates or locations for his future live performances.

What It Means: Red Alert’s retirement closes an influential chapter in New York hip-hop radio. His decades on the air helped introduce emerging artists to wider audiences and establish hip-hop in commercial radio. Moreover, his departur reflects a generational shift. Pioneering DJs make way for newer voices in an increasingly digital music landscape. However, his continued involvement in live events will allow him to maintain connections with audiences beyond radio.
