Sen. Richard Blumenthal is demanding records from FCC Chairman Brendan Carr concerning media investigations and regulatory decisions. The requests are part of a broader congressional inquiry involving corporate donations to President Donald Trump’s White House ballroom project.
What We Know: According to Reuters, the Connecticut Democrat will chair the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations beginning in January. His November 5 demands include records concerning the FCC’s 2025 approval of the Paramount-Skydance merger. Blumenthal also questioned Carr’s decision to order an early license review of Disney’s eight ABC-owned television stations. The FCC initiated the review in April 2026, citing concerns about Disney’s employment policies. Blumenthal requested voluntary compliance by January 4, 2027, warning that continued noncompliance could prompt subpoenas.
What They Said: Carr’s Actions “erode and undermine freedom of speech and freedom of the press and bear on the laws governing media consolidation.”-Senator Richard Blumenthal
What Remains Unclear: It’s unclear whether Carr will provide the requested documents before January. Additionally, the scope and timing of potential subpoenas remain undetermined.
What It Means: Democrats’ midterm victories could bring greater congressional scrutiny of the FCC’s media investigations, merger approvals and broadcast licensing decisions. With Blumenthal set to lead the Senate investigative panel in January, potential subpoenas could provide new insight into the agency’s regulatory decisions. The inquiry could also shed light on the FCC’s oversight of major media companies, including Disney and Paramount.
