Danny Parkins: MLB Should Dictate Playoff Schedule, Not TV Partners

0

In yesterday’s Game 3 of the NLCS, the Arizona Diamondbacks hosted the Philadelphia Phillies in a game that started at 2:07 PM local time. 670 The Score’s Danny Parkins argues it’s clear television is setting the start times, and that’s not right.

During Parkins & Spiegel Thursday, Danny Parkins made the case that games of this magnitude should be scheduled with the fans of the two teams playing mind, rather than what’s best for television ratings.

“I think they should be in primetime. Slightly staggered so that if you want to watch the end of both games, you could watch the end of both games,” said Parkins. “But my belief is, in general, I feel people that are watching the NLCS game are Diamondbacks fans and Phillies fans. And in general, it’s Astros fans and Rangers fans. Put them in primetime so that most of those fans can watch and then everybody else who is a casual fan could watch some of it, all of it, whatever. They can pick and choose.”

“I’m sure the advertisers are promised that each game at this point in the playoffs will be in the clear, but as much as possible,” said Matt Spiegel as justification for the start time. “I suspect that each market or each league was promised that it won’t be the late game on consecutive nights of the doubleheader, or something to that effect. They’re not going to make Arizona be the late game in terms of East Coast ad rates. That kind of crap.”

“I know the reason is television, right? Like, I know that,” Parkins responded. “But if you then get into this scenario, and you’re Major League Baseball, it feels like the workaround should be”, start times in the western-most game should be cemented as being in primetime.

For Friday’s MLB Postseason action, the ALCS game between the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers begins at 5:07 PM ET, while the NLCS game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks begins at 8:07 PM ET.

Alex Rodriguez: Yankees Criticism on TV ‘Doesn’t Help My Case’ for Jersey Retirement

0

Alex Rodriguez is one of the most accomplished players in the history of baseball, but his legacy is perceived by many to be somewhat tarnished because of his use of PEDs. Today, Rodriguez is on FOX Sports, contributing to its coverage of Major League Baseball. He believes his criticism of his former team makes it more difficult to get his jersey number retired.

In a recent interview with Evan Roberts and Tiki Barber on WFAN, he admitted that the decision to keep his number in the distribution cycle did not make him happy. Barber asked if he had ever been approached about a possible retirement.

“No,” Alex Rodriguez replied. “With my job on TV – and Tiki, you know this – I’m too critical to the Yankees, and that doesn’t help my case. But I get paid to tell the truth and if you guys ask me a question, I’m going to tell you exactly as I see it and not sugarcoat it because I want my number retired. If it’s not retired, then so be it.”

Rodriguez recognizes the honor of having a uniform number retired and hopes that he is given such a distinction in the future. He remains in the purview of the Yankees organization as a media member, commentating on Yankees games on the Sunday Night Baseball with KayRod alternate broadcast and discussing the team during MLB on FOX studio coverage.

Additionally, he is now colleagues with Yankees legend and Hall of Fame shortstop Derek Jeter, establishing and maintaining a rapport as analysts tasked with breaking down the coverage.

“My relationship with Hal [Steinbrenner] and the organization is fine, but when I’m on television and they ask me a question, I can’t sugarcoat it and make something look or pretend because it’s not. I wish I could say that things were going great and they’re running it like the Phillies and the Braves and Houston and the Dodgers, but that’s not what I feel, so it’s not what I’m going to say.”

Roberts posed a theory he had devised to Alex Rodriguez about his number retirement, stating that the longer the team goes without a championship, the more likely the organization will look to honor his legacy. The Yankees have won 27 World Series championships, the most in the history of Major League Baseball, but have not captured a championship, let alone a World Series appearance, in the last 14 seasons.

“I could buy that theory, but I don’t want that to happen,” Rodriguez said. “I want them to win [and] I want them to turn this around. We have the greatest fans in baseball, and they deserve to be in October. Do you know how difficult it is not to make the playoffs in 2023?”

Mike Valenti: Karsch & Anderson ‘Looked Like They Saw a Ghost’ After Michigan Sign Stealing Allegations

0

Reports of the Michigan Wolverines being accused of an elaborate sign-stealing operation surfaced Thursday, which rocked the college football world. 97.1 The Ticket’s Mike Valenti said it appeared to affect the preceding program on the station, as well.

To open his program Thursday, Valenti admitted that he wasn’t as knowledgeable on the subject as he would like to be. He then gave an overarching recap of the allegations.

“The reports are everywhere. I wanna listen, I wanna get edumacated (sic), and I wanna gain a better understanding of what the hell we’re dealing with here,” said Mike Valenti. “I’ll just tell you, walking out of here, Doug (Karsch) and Scott (“Gator” Anderson) looked like they saw a ghost.”

In a report from Yahoo! Sports, it is alleged that Michigan staffers or those close to the program went to games of future opponents to record signals being given by coaches to decipher for future use, which is a violation of NCAA rules. The allegations come after Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh was already suspended earlier this season for a purported violation of NCAA rules.

Doug Karsch currently serves as the radio play-by-play voice of the Michigan Wolverines, in addition to hosting middays with Anderson on 97.1 The Ticket. He shared Friday that he had spoken with Harbaugh, who vehemently defended himself from any wrongdoing allegations.

Jeremy White: Next Gen Stats Cast on Thursday Night Football is Worth Watching

0

The second season of Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime Video is utilizing new artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance the viewing experience. The new Prime Vision with Next Gen Stats viewing feed implements insights gained through instant data capture of several key metrics, including location, speed, and acceleration. Moreover, predictive technologies identify open targets, likely defensive assignments and highlights key plays throughout the night that viewers can quickly and easily access.

The broadcast is redefining the way people watch football, granting more control to the consumer than ever before and allowing them to tailor their viewing experience. On the year, Prime Video has posted five consecutive weeks of double-digit viewership increases year-over-year (YoY) and has a median age of 47, seven years younger than audiences tuning in to NFL games on linear platforms.

On Friday morning, WGR 550 AM host Jeremy White described his viewing experience on Prime Video and how he was specifically blown away by predicting when and who from the defense is going to blitz the quarterback. During one play, the AI technology illuminated two players on the Saints defense in red, signaling that they were most likely to blitz. Sure enough, these defensive players followed through, imposing pressure on the quarterback and impressing viewers of the feed.

“If I’m watching Thursday Night Football, that’s the broadcast I’m watching,” White said. “That is my habit now – I’m watching the Next Gen Stats cast. In the last couple of weeks, they started doing that, and I feel like every time I’ve noticed it, they are on the money.”

A byproduct of these new functionalities, White presumes, could be augmented frustration from fans when players do not perform or make the correct reads. With viewers having more clarity regarding gameplay throughout the contest, some fans may be more apt to hold their teams to expectations of foresight and execution more difficult to attain.

“If a guy goes short of the first down line and you’re watching at home and you’re like, ‘How come he didn’t just go another foot?,’ the answer is he can’t see that line,” White said. “We can; he can’t, and there will be a play, I don’t know, where if the AI predicts or shows which receiver is going to be open and the quarterback doesn’t throw to him; after five years of that, are we saying, ‘How come Allen didn’t see Davis wide open?’”

White referenced something former WGR host Matthew Coller expressed regarding the technology, affirming that it could become a pedagogical tool for athletes leading up to a game. Utilizing predictive AI within weekly routines has the potential to close the gap between the athlete and the viewer; however, part of the game is dependent on having strong reflexes and being able to adapt a moment’s notice.

“It is predictive AI that is, in real time, showing you tendencies,” White said, “and that watching the tape back might include this to help with visualization.”

Jon Stewart Ending Apple Show After ‘Creative Differences’

0

The Problem with Jon Stewart on AppleTV+ will not return for its third season after Stewart and the company hit an impasse over what is being called “creative differences”.

Stewart and Apple reportedly had differences over his interests in discussing human rights violations in China and AI. The longtime host and comedian had pondered the topics as subjects for upcoming shows, which Apple executives pushed back against.

The company is one of the leaders in AI technology and also relies upon Chinese labor for the majority of its product manufacturing.

After receiving pushback, Jon Stewart made the decision to end the program “rather than have his hands tied”, according to numerous reports.

According to a report from The New York Times, production on the third season was already underway, with filming yet to commence.

The program hosted by Stewart debuted in 2021 and centered on political issues plaguing the nation.

Curtis LeGeyt: Our Industry Needs to Lead Fight Against Misinformation

0

Misinformation remains a difficult situation to navigate for news organizations. NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt believes the media industry needs to lead the fight against it.

During an address at the Media Institute’s Free Speech America Gala Thursday, LeGeyt argued for the industry’s attention to the growing problem.

“The challenges have never been greater while the stakes have never been higher. The credibility of responsible fact-based journalism is under daily attack. Meanwhile, our society is under siege by the relentless tide of misinformation online,” said LeGeyt. “This creates a double-edged sword where the simple fact of reporting the truth can often be perceived (or at least characterized) as taking a side or having a bias.”

Curtis LeGeyt continued by noting that fighting misinformation remains paramount for the public perception surrounding the media industry.

“We know that this misinformation, and the resulting distrust, have dire consequences. We experience it in our daily lives, whether it’s in our communities, amongst our friends and coworkers, or at a Thanksgiving dinner. How many of these simmering disagreements could have been prevented if we were working off a common set of facts?

“The public must be able to rely on us. If we aren’t working every day to push back on these challenges, no one is,” concluded LeGeyt. “We all need to up our game and be relentless to ensure that future generations can access and easily identify factual news and information, the very information that keeps us safe and helps us make informed decisions.”

“It may seem daunting. But the simple, undeniable truth is that what you do — trusted journalism — is the antidote to misinformation. And given the divisiveness in Congress and potential tsunami of political attacks that will accompany the upcoming election season, America’s leadership may need to come from our newsrooms delivered in the form of facts.”

Peyton Manning: ManningCast Has ‘Kind of Stumbled On’ to Best Format

0

In what started with a video from Omaha Productions revealing that the company had held auditions for sports commentators and celebrities to become the third host of Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli, colloquially known as the ManningCast, the show is thriving by taking a less-is-more approach. Despite being in its third season and attaining widespread success, the Manning brothers have only welcomed two guests per episode. This deviates from previous iterations of the alternate presentation, during which the quarterback tandem has implemented three to four guests.

During an appearance on Thursday’s edition of The Pat McAfee Show, Pat McAfee asked Peyton Manning about the broadcast, which makes its return on Monday for a matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings. Within his question, he affirmed that the broadcast has had its “fastball” this year even though there have been various matchups that have not gone down-to-the-wire or as expected. For example, the first broadcast of the season started with New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffering a torn Achilles tendon four plays into the team’s first offensive drive.

“The plan was sort of the same philosophy,” Manning said. “We started out with four guests in Year 1; went to three last year. We tried to have three this past season… and we’ve had some late cancellations. We’ve only had two guests, so it’s given more time for Eli to make fun of me. It’s certainly given us maybe a little more time to talk football, so maybe that’s something we’ve kind of stumbled on to.”

Some of the initial guests that appeared on the air with Peyton and Eli Manning include John McEnroe, Will Ferrell and Jimmy Kimmel, discussing the game at hand and other topics as necessary. Before the season, the rumors of a third host that were perpetuated through the video garnered several million views. While the broadcast decided to stick with the original hosting structure, Peyton Manning believes that the other changes it has made have elicited a more enjoyable product for the viewers.

“It’s been fun,” Manning said. “Obviously a lot of things have happened in the game we haven’t expected ever since Aaron [Rodgers got] injured in Week 1. [That] tells you, ‘Don’t ever assume anything in the NFL.’ This should be a great game though – looking forward to seeing these Niners up close.”

Monday Night Football returns this upcoming Monday, Oct. 23 when the 49ers take on the Vikings from U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn. Joe Buck, Troy Aikman and Lisa Salters will bring fans the traditional broadcast on ESPN starting at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST, and the ManningCast will occur simultaneously on ESPN2. Both presentations are available to stream through the company’s OTT streaming platform, ESPN+.

Bret Baier: ‘Most Days It’s Ok to Hit Singles and Doubles’ But I’m Always Chasing Home Runs

0

Fox News Special Report anchor Bret Baier is one of the most widely known anchors in American television. With that comes increased access and also increased scrutiny. He says the increased access is the key.

During an interview with Variety, Baier talked about his recent interview with Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, which took months of planning. He said he’s always in search of heavy hitters.

“We had a talk about what the show should look like,” said Baier. “Most days, you take singles and doubles and you cover the news and you do it as best you can, but the occasional triple and home run sometimes lend themselves to other big plays.”

Baier added that when you’re dealing with potential interviews of world leaders “you’ve got to throw the long ball and hope it gets caught.”

Fox News President Jay Wallace added, “There are lots of deputy prime ministers around, but when it comes to the true leaders of the world, there are only a handful of them that really move the dial.”

“In other countries, especially with other types of governments, they don’t have to talk,” Wallace continued. “When you get them, you want to make the most of them.”
