Bally Sports Arizona Asks Out of Arizona Coyotes Contract

0

As Diamond Sports Group waits to learn whether or not it will be granted an extension to file a reorganization plan with its creditors under Chapter 11 bankruptcy, it is seeking to forgo one of its broadcasting contracts. Just one week ahead of puck drop for the 2023-24 NHL regular season, Bally Sports Arizona is looking to exit its deal with the Arizona Coyotes.

If it is successful, the Coyotes would complete the gradual dissolution of professional play-by-play rights from Bally Sports Arizona.

The regional sports network lost the Arizona Diamondbacks during the second half of the MLB season, while the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury took their rights to over-the-air television.

“The debtors have determined, in their business judgment, that the Coyotes agreement no longer fits within the debtors’ long-term plans and should be rejected,” Diamond Sports Group said in a court filing. “….The debtors have discussed the relief requested in this motion with the Coyotes, and the parties have mutually agreed on this course of action.”

During efforts to construct an NHL-regulated arena in Mesa, Ariz. after being denied by a public vote in nearby Tempe, the Coyotes observed what was happening with Bally Sports Arizona. At that time, the team released a statement in July outlining its current situation and how it would affect its broadcasts for the upcoming season.

“We are fully aware of the developments regarding Bally Sports Arizona,” it read. “The Arizona Coyotes remain under contract with Bally Sports Arizona and remain hopeful that the network will continue to broadcast our games this season. Nonetheless, we will continue to evaluate all of our options, as needed, and will ensure that our great fans across the Valley are able to watch our games this fall.”

Throughout the process of Diamond trying to restructure after bankruptcy, the NHL and NBA have scrutinized the occurrences to make sure that the 27 teams the regional sports network operator carries are aired.

If the bankruptcy court grants this motion, it is unknown where Coyotes games would be televised. The first broadcast for the Coyotes is set to take place on Friday, Oct. 13 when the team visits the New Jersey Devils to open the season.

“The Coyotes have consented to this relief, and the debtors understand that the Coyotes and the NHL have transition plans in place to facilitate the continued distribution of Coyotes games to fans,” Diamond Sports Group said in the motion.

Amazon Ending Amp Streaming Platform

0

Amazon has announced plans to shut down its Amp streaming audio platform.

The platform was introduced with much fanfare last year as technology designed to “create your own radio show”.

“Radio has always been about music and culture. But imagine if you were inventing the medium for the first time today. You’d combine what people love about radio—spontaneous talk, new music discovery, diverse personalities, and broad programming—with all that’s made possible by today’s technology,” the company said at launch.

“You’d make it so anybody with a phone, a voice, and a love for music could make their own show. And that’s exactly what we’re doing. Amp makes it possible for you to grab the mic and run the airwaves. We are creating a new version of radio that will have an infinite dial of shows.”

However, after less than two years in operation, the company has pulled the plug on the app.

“We’ve made the difficult decision to close Amp,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement. “We learned a lot about how live music communities interact in the process, which we are bringing to bear as we build new fan experiences at scale in Amazon Music.”

Amp was launched as a live audio app Clubhouse rose in popularity in 2022. It featured a daily morning show hosted by Nick Cannon that debuted in April, as well as other prominent former radio hosts.

The move by Amazon comes as it has undergone a deep dive into its expenses. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has been on the record as saying that underperforming products from the company are likely to be cut as the retailer freezes corporate hiring and eliminated more than 27,000 jobs.

Altitude Sports Radio Tops Denver Sports 104.3 The Fan for First Time in Summer Ratings Book

History has been made in the mile high city. In the latest summer ratings book, Altitude Sports Radio topped Denver Sports 104.3 The Fan for the first time since launching in April 2016.

Beginning with weekday prime (M-F 6a-7p), Altitude Sports Radio registered a 5.3 share, good for a 4th place tie with Men 25-54. Meanwhile, Denver Sports 104.3 The Fan finished with a 4.5 share, finishing 7th.

Altitude’s best story for the quarter was in mornings. Marc Moser, Vic Lombardi, and Brett Kane produced an impressive 7.1 share to finish 1st from 7a-10a. The morning trio had the best overall performance of any local sports talk show during the summer book. This now marks back to back head to head victories for Moser, Lombardi, and Kane. They also won the spring book. The Fan’s talented morning team of Mark Schlereth and Mike Evans generated a 4.5 share for the book to rank 7th.

Altitude’s midday shows were also in good shape this quarter. Dempsey and Company which mostly features Chris Dempsey, Matt McChesney, and Alex Rajaniemi delivered a 4.1 share to rank 9th for the book. The station’s second midday program, PHD featuring Tyler Polumbus, Scott Hastings, and Josh Dover earned an 8th place tie with a 4.3 share. The fall book will be interesting to follow as Dover recently exited Altitude to join The Fan.

For The Fan, middays produced different stories. The Player’s Club with Orlando Franklin, Chad Brown, and Nate Jackson had a 3.2 share and was ranked 14th, 5 spots behind Altitude. Their popular 12-3 show Stokley and Zach with Brandon Stockley and Zach Bye were in a dead heat with Altitude thanks to a similar 4.3 share.

With Dover switching sides to join The Fan, the station recently revamped its lineup. Stokley is now teaming with Dover in afternoons, and Bye has moved into afternoons with former Denver Bronco Phillip Lindsay.

The last of the weekday shows saw the afternoon drive team of Nate Kreckman and Andy Lindahl reel in a 4th place finish with a 6.2 share. The Drive, The Fan’s afternoon show previously hosted by Darren ‘DMac’ McKee finished 5th with a 5.1 share. Former Bronco Derek Wolfe was also a brief part of the summer book. He exited the station in July.

Closing things out with a look at the full week (M-SU 6a-Mid), Altitude Sports Radio garnered a 4.1 share to rank 7th for the quarter. Denver Sports 104.3 The Fan record a 3.7 to finish 9th.

Not to be forgotten, Newsradio KOA’s afternoon show, KOA Sports with Dave Logan, Alfred Williams, and Ryan Edwards, which airs M-F from 3p-6p delivered a 2.3 share to finish 18th. That was up year over year from a 0.7 share, 29th place ranking.

ESPN Launching NHL Whiparound Program ‘Frozen Frenzy’

0

ESPN will air a special whiparound program for its coverage of the National Hockey League, which will be hosted by John Buccigross. Frozen Frenzy will allow fans to see key highlights and happenings throughout the night when all 32 teams are in action and a new game is slated to begin every 15 minutes. The program will be presented on ESPN2 starting at 8 p.m. ET after beginning on ESPN+ in the preceding hour.

Conversely, ESPN’s primary channel has scheduled a tripleheader featuring matchups between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals; the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks; and the Philadelphia Flyers and reigning Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights.

“We worked all summer long to figure this out with our programming team and with the league,” Linda Schulz, coordinating producer of the NHL on ESPN, recently told media members. “….Bucci will be there to cover it all in the studio and bouncing around, and you will see every goal; you will see every power play [and] you will see every hit. We will just bounce around in what we’re calling Frozen Frenzy.”

As part of its media rights contract with the NHL, ESPN has the rights for out-of-market games and is thus able to disseminate a production of this scale and magnitude.

Buccigross is keenly aware of the changing state in a league filled with parity and down-to-the-wire battles, with many contending teams emerging from smaller marketplaces. Because of this, when considering the possibility of a Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs, he quipped that executives would need a “Xanax prescription” if it ended up happening. From the perspective of a hockey fan though, it is something that he would want.

“I want to see – when you talk about Connor McDavid, who’s our Patrick Mahomes, and Auston Matthews and the curse; the Cubs-Red Sox vibe that Toronto suddenly has, they’re over 50 years [and] approaching 60. Can we sell that in America?,” Buccigross wondered. “I’d like to think we can. I’d like to think that number – yeah, it’s not going to be Chicago-Boston. It’s not going to be that way.”

When analyzing the current state of the league, there are a plethora of young superstars that are being marketed league-wide in an effort to expand the reach of the game. Throughout North America, hockey has been steadily increasing its footprint with efforts to appeal to younger demographics and presenting its content in new and innovative ways across different consumption outlets.

ESPN recently launched a new creative campaign titled, “To know hockey is to love hockey,” showcasing the facets of the game that it believes make it worth watching and following.

“In the East, we’re going to be losing Boston, Pittsburgh [and] Washington, and gaining New Jersey, Ottawa and Buffalo,” Buccigross said. “From a TV market standpoint… we’d better figure something out and do something in terms of that.”

OutKick Launching New Sports Betting Show with Kelly in Vegas

0

Three months after making her exit from Barstool Sports, Kelly “Kelly in Vegas” Stewart has been hired by OutKick to host a new betting show debuting today.

OutKick founder Clay Travis made the announcement on Twitter/X on Wednesday afternoon.

Kelly quoted Clay’s tweet and essentially said it’s been a longtime coming.

Stewart left Barstool in June after around two years at the media outlet. She got picked up by Dave Portnoy and co. in 2021 after she was fired by ESPN a month into her contract.

Originally brought on to be an analyst on Daily Wager and to focus on betting content, ESPN let Kelly go after tweets surfaced from the early 2010s of Stewart using homophobic language.

“I know the words I used were unacceptable and hurtful and I am terribly sorry for this lapse in judgment, but I cannot apologize for standing up to the vicious attacks I, and so many other female personalities, endure from online trolls,” Kelly wrote at the time after announcing she had been let go at ESPN.

OutKick came to the defense of Kelly at that time, blaming cancel culture and emphasizing how absurd it was that people would dig into tweets that are over a decade old to get someone fired.

Stewart is the owner of WagerTalk and hosts a number of betting podcasts, including Kelly & Murray, which she co-hosts with John Murray.

Sean McManus: I’ve Known Since I Was 11 I Wanted to Produce Big Time Sports

0

CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus is going to be retiring next spring, closing the book on a long and storied career in sports television. An interest in live production as a child following his father — legendary broadcaster Jim McKay — laid the foundation for the career McManus wanted to pursue.

The longtime executive was a guest on The Marchand & Ourand Sports Media Podcast recently, and McManus recalled attending a PGA Tour event in Jacksonville when he got recruited as a kid by legendary producer Chuck Howard to work as a sweeper.

Having been around his dad and already having a passion for TV, it was after he received an envelope for $25 for the work he did as a kid that sealed the deal for McManus.

“At that moment I said to myself, if they’re gonna pay me to do this job, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life,” McManus said. “So I really at age 11 wanted to produce and direct big-time sporting events. Big golf events like The Masters and the PGA Championship and the World Series and the Super Bowl and all these other great events.”

Co-host John Ourand asked Sean McManus to clarify that his love has always been with the production side and that McManus never really wanted to follow his father’s footsteps and be a broadcaster himself.

“I thought that would be a hard act to follow, and I never gravitated towards that,” McManus said. “I really loved the live production much more so than I did behind the microphone.”

Sean McManus added that he realized early on that in order to get your foot in the door as a broadcaster at that time you needed to have gotten your start at a small local station. He just always loved production more.

News Radio Hosts Need to Learn to Tell a Joke

0

There is a basic formula to tell a joke on the air. Most radio people are not that funny and there is a way to be hilarious!

A little background: When I entered radio, it was at the very end of the Boss Jock era. That movement was over, but there were many radio jocks still puking on the air. This entered the era of the impressionist. If you could do a great impression of a star, you got a radio gig. A good take on a celebrity of the day like Michael Jackson, Mike Tyson, or Bill Clinton was considered very funny by radio executives.

When I started my radio career, I had neither discipline. My goofy nasal voice was not what people wanted to hear according to programmers. My lack of impressions was equally loathed. I was like Cortes burning the boats when his troops landed in Mexico though. For me, there was no going back. I was going to pursue a radio career and there was nothing that would stop me. So, I had a terrible voice and couldn’t contribute with a take on a famous celebrity.  Perfect! Radio will be perfect.

So, I decided that radio was remarkably unfunny. I thought “What the heck? That may be my advantage”.

So, how do you learn the skill of telling a joke? How could I be funny? I started showing up at comedy clubs on Open Mic Night. The comedy scene in Minneapolis was red hot and aspiring comics were showing up from all over the country to cut their teeth. I decided that I would only tell original jokes. I would get on stage and learn how to get that laugh. It was awful.

I was on stage at least 20 times before I got my first laugh. My skull took a while to figure it out. By the way, a few experienced comics took me under their wings. These nice people taught me the craft. They didn’t need to do so.

So, here is how a modern joke is told. Dave Chappelle and Bill Burr are the masters currently.  Here are the elements: A Punchline, A realistic scenario, self-deprecating wrinkle. Here is a perfect (NSFW) example…

Chappelle tells this story that was retold on radio stations an uncountable number of times.  He gets the audience to lean in. The pauses are perfect. The cop scenario was spot on.

If you notice, some of Dave’s funniest moments in these 5 minutes were delivered deadpan.  Chappelle was allowing the words to tell the story with minimal inflection. It is a terrific display of restraint. The pauses cannot be praised enough. Radio people have been programmed never to allow dead air. Silence is an awesome tool.

Dave’s joke about himself was perfect. He said that the alleged assailants do not sound like white people. The verbal volley would sound like something that Chappelle would say. Radio folk have issues sometimes telling self-deprecating things about themselves. If you want to build a relationship with your audience, do just that. Listeners will identify with your ‘weakness.’  Everyone has shortcomings. Admitting to yours makes you real.

Bill Burr has this bit on Bill Gates’s divorce. His opening is perfect. Conan throws out the opening and Burr lays out the perfect self-deprecating thought on COVID. We have all thought about it. Perfect bit. Conan plays the straight man perfectly.

If you use humor, these are perfect templates. These are common stories that the audience can relate.

During my on-air career, I try to always think of those audiences on open mic nights. I can hear the silence, I see the faces not smiling or laughing. I know the feeling. A lot of radio people have never got on the stage to an audience that was expecting big laughs. It is a naked feeling.

I also know that being real is an asset. Telling the big news story with a criticism of yourself, then the stinger. By the way, if you watch Chappelle and Burr, sometimes these guys start with the punchline or the self-deprecating story. It reels the audience into the joke. The crafting of these moments on the air has beautiful dividends.

Radio is the theater of the mind. Creating those special moments is key. It is that secret sauce for your audience’s good-will.

The obituary of using an impression as a punchline was written decades ago. It creates zero connectivity to your listener. When you create a listener-focused experience, you will benefit with loyalty and the halo effect. Have you ever met someone who only purchases one brand of car? Have you asked that individual why? They will tell you that the vehicle brand is the best because of whatever traits they find most important in their purchase. If you say, “What about another brand?”,  they will tell you that they never considered it or that the brand they love is so much better.

It is like telling someone that their child is ugly. Even if that child’s appearance would make a sight-impaired granny cry, the parent will never see it. It is an important part of branding.  Humor is a part of why your listeners love you. There is an old saying in sales: “Don’t leave money on the table. Get it all.”

Your audience likes and perhaps loves you already. Make your connection deeper. It is a win for you, your station, and radio.
